How to advertise for a flat or house to rent in 2012

Thursday, August 16, 2007
It's really simple:

  • Send us a brief description of what sort of accommodation you are looking for, how long you need it for and when you'll be wanting to formalise a rental agreement.
  • We'll give your advert a reference number and post it on the site.

  • By sending us an advert, you are accepting our Terms & Conditions - please make sure you read them.
  • If anyone responds, we'll forward their message on. The rest is up to you.

How to advertise your flat or house

It's really simple:

  • Send us a brief description of your home, its size, how many bedrooms, its distance from Stratford and proximity to public transport. You can write what you like but try to keep it to around 150 words. For safety reasons, don't send any photos or give the exact address.
  • We'll give your advert a reference number and post it on the site.

  • By sending us an advert, you are accepting our Terms & Conditions - please make sure you read them.
  • If anyone responds, we'll forward their message on. The rest is up to you.

Hang on, is this really kosher?

Honestly, there are no catches. Escape 2012 will NEVER ask you for any money and NEVER pass on your e-mail address to private companies so they can try and sell you life insurance or cut-price DVDs.

The people involved in the site are just local residents who have been involved in community campaigns or voluntary groups in east London and were, it has to be said, pretty much opposed to the hosting of the Olympics in the midst of our communities. But now it's happening and we just have to live with it.

By getting as far away as we possibly can.

But if you're still not sure, then we admire your scepticism. There's not nearly enough of it about and a lot of untrustworthy bastards on the internet just waiting to fleece the credulous - take a load at this load of old nonsense for starters.

So instead, just feel free to browse the site and move on to something else. We'd recommend a visit to Games Monitor for a refreshingly different view on the Olympics

Starting rather early, aren't we?

Now it might seem a long way off, but here at Escape 2012, we thought we'd get the ball rolling early, especially as some crook in a sharp suit is likely to see putting people together as an interesting and lucrative 'dotcom' opportunity. Instead, we intend to run an entirely free brokering service, offer some advice on the kind of paperwork you might want to consider and then leave it up to you.

Oh, and some time in 2011, we thought we might check out the hotel prices in Paris or Barcelona...

Why get away?

Maybe it'll be the thought of the disruption, the crowds, the almost cult-like insistence that everyone has to join in. Maybe it'll be the increased - and increasingly draconian - security measures and denial of civil liberties that seem likely to be put in place. Perhaps you don't see what all the fuss is about beach volley ball. There are plenty of very good, completely rational reasons to get away from east London for a couple of weeks in the summer of 2012.

And a powerful incentive might well also be finding someone to rent your home to, help pay your mortgage for a month and maybe even cover the cost of a Eurostar ticket to the continent. London is an expensive city at the best of times but in 2012, the capital's hotels will squeeze visitors until their eyeballs pop for every penny their industry can make - and any appeal to their 'better' natures based on some sense of Olympic spirit is hardly likely to have much credibility when the Games has itself become a massive corporate entity.

But whilst exorbitant prices are all very well for journalists with massive expense accounts, there are a lot of others who want to be here in 2012. That might include the families of competitors from developing countries, or independent journalists, or even someone with an obsession with world-class table tennis. They'll be increasingly desperate by the start of the Olympic year.

If you live in east London, that's where you come in. You get a holiday, they get a roof over their head and everyone's happy.

And it's a lot more tangible than vague promises about an 'Olympic legacy'.
